How to choose an audio interface | 7 criteria to help you choose the number of inputs, loopback, and sound quality

If you choose an audio interface based solely on sound quality, you may not have the necessary terminals or have trouble with the distribution settings. If you sort out your usage first, you can choose one that will last a long time without buying an overly expensive model.

1|How many records to record at the same time

If you are recording one person's vocals or guitar, two microphone input systems are sufficient. If you want to simultaneously record drums, multiple people's broadcasts, or external synths, you will need multiple inputs. Count the number of terminals you will use at the same time in the next year rather than the terminals you may use in the future.

2 | Consider microphone input and line input separately

Even if there are four combo terminals, they may not all have the same specifications. Check the number of mic preamps, Hi-Z inputs, and line inputs for connecting stereo equipment. If you use a condenser microphone, you will also need 48V phantom power.

3|Number of headphone outputs and volume

Separate headphone outputs are useful if the singer and engineer listen at different volumes. If you use high-impedance headphones, also make sure they have sufficient volume and bass stability.

4|Look at the flexibility of loopback in distribution

Loopback is useful if you want to distribute PC sound, microphone, and DAW sound all at once. However, there are models that simply turn it on and off, and models that use a dedicated mixer to separate the settings. We also look at compatibility with the distribution software you use.

5|Drivers and latency

Rather than the sample rate in the spec table, it is important to be able to record stably with the buffer size you usually use. Check the update history of the dedicated ASIO driver on Windows, and check the speed of response to OS updates on Mac.

6|Monitor output and expandability

If you want to switch between two sets of speakers, use an external headphone amplifier, or increase inputs with ADAT, check the number of outputs and digital terminals. If you have no plans for expansion, there is no need to spend money on unused terminals.

7|Include the included software in the price.

May come with a DAW, amp simulator, or plug-in. Check whether it is a duplicate of software you already own and whether it is a permanent license or a limited-time license.

Final candidates will prioritize reviewing with their own microphone, headphones, and PC environment. In a price range where the difference in sound quality is small, stability, ease of operation, and support have a greater impact on production time.
