What you need to start DTM | Minimum equipment and how to budget

DTM does not require you to have all the equipment before starting. What you need will change depending on the music you want to make and whether or not you want to record it, so it's better to start with the bare minimum and add only the parts you're having trouble with to reduce mistakes.

1|PC

It is our top priority that the DAW works stably. First, run the trial version on your computer and check the CPU usage, memory shortage, and storage capacity. Don't decide on a replacement based on the spec sheet alone.

2|DAW

This is the main software for recording, typing, editing, and mixing. It is important that the screen is compatible with your computer's OS and that it is easy for you to understand. You can learn the basic process with the free version and trial version.

3|Headphones or speakers

In environments where it is difficult to emit sound to those around you, wired headphones are practical. We focus not only on sound quality, but also on the fact that it doesn't hurt even if you wear it for a long time. Bluetooth is not suitable for recording or playing because of its high latency.

4|Audio interface

Equipment for recording microphones and guitars, and ensuring stable sound from speakers and headphones. It's not necessary if you're just typing. Select from the required number of inputs and connection terminals.

5|Mike

Required when recording singing or live instruments. Condenser and dynamic have their own environments. In addition to the mic itself, budget for the stand, cable, and pop guard.

6|MIDI keyboard

This is a device that makes it easier to input notes in real time. It is not required as you can also enter it on the screen. Choose the number of keyboards based on your experience with keyboards, the width of your desk, and whether or not you want to carry it around.

The first priority is a stable computer, an easy-to-use DAW, and wired headphones that don't cause fatigue. If you want to record, add an interface and microphone, and if you want to type faster, add a MIDI keyboard.

Don't concentrate your budget on one expensive piece of equipment, use it on the cause that is stopping your production. Creating a song before buying equipment will help you decide what you really need.
