How to place monitor speakers | 7 points to fix before buying a new one
The sound of a monitor speaker depends as much on how you place it as the product itself. Just moving it a few centimeters may improve the low frequency range and localization, so review the installation before purchasing a new one.
1|Move the left and right listening positions closer to an equilateral triangle
Align the distances between the left and right speakers and from each speaker to your ears. Even if it is not a perfect equilateral triangle, the standard for localization is that the left and right sides are the same distance apart.
2|Adjust the tweeter to ear level
High frequencies vary greatly depending on orientation, so use a stand or pedestal so that the tweeter is near ear height. If you plan to place the speaker horizontally, check to see if the manufacturer clearly states that it is compatible.
3|Align the distance to the wall on the left and right
If only one side is close to a wall or furniture, the amount of low frequency and reflected sound will change. Make it as symmetrical as possible, and gradually vary the distance from the back wall to find the most even bass.
4|Avoid the corners of the room
At the corner, the low frequencies overlap and become louder and easier to hear. Adjust the speakers and listening position by moving them away from corners and avoiding placing them completely in the center of the room.
5|Reduce desk reflections
When sound reflects off the top of a large desk, it creates peaks and valleys in the mid-high range. There are ways to raise the speakers a little higher, don't place them too far into the desk, and use isolation pads instead of placing them directly on a hard surface.
6|Compare by changing the internal swing angle
If you point the left and right axes toward your ears, it will be easier to get clarity, and if you turn them slightly away, the high frequencies may become gentler. Using the manufacturer's recommendations as a starting point, look for an angle where the center voice is small and converges on one point.
7|Judging by low volume
At high volumes, room effects and auditory habituation become stronger. Check if you can follow the vocals, kick, and bass at a level slightly louder than conversation.
After adjustment, record the left/right position and height with your smartphone, and listen to the reference song at the same volume. We aim for an installation where the low range does not shake more than necessary, the center is stable, and the high range does not sting even when the volume is turned up.
