How to reduce DTM latency | Reasons and settings for sound delay only during recording

Delays during recording are not only caused by PC performance. Checking buffer sizes, heavy plugins, drivers, and monitor paths in turn can improve sound quality without sacrificing it.
1|Reduce buffer size only when recording
While 512 to 1024 samples is stable when mixing, you may notice a delay when recording. First try 64 to 128 samples, and if you experience noise or cutouts, increase it one step at a time.
2|Stop heavy processing on master and recording tracks
Linear phase EQ, look-ahead limiters, noise reduction, and oversampling can add significant delay. Bypass only while recording and check your DAW's plug-in delay display.
3|Select a dedicated driver
Windows uses the ASIO driver provided by the manufacturer. Using generic drivers or multiple audio devices at the same time may increase lag and instability.
4|Use direct monitoring
The audio interface's direct monitor returns the input sound to the headphones before processing it on the PC. While the delay is almost eliminated, you can't hear the effects in your DAW, so switch them depending on your needs.
5|Do not increase the sample rate unnecessarily
Higher sample rates can reduce latency for the same buffer value, but increase CPU load and file size. It is safer not to try to hide problems that are not stable at 44.1kHz or 48kHz at 96kHz.
6|Avoid wireless devices
Bluetooth headphones have a large delay in the compression and transmission process. For recording and performance, I use wired headphones and direct connection to an audio interface.
7 | Lighten the project
Freeze and bounce edited tracks and stop unused soft instruments. Another effective method is to prepare a separate lightweight template for recording.
After changing the settings, restart your DAW and interface. Adopts the smallest buffer that will not cut out the sound, cause no discomfort during performance, and ensure that the recording position does not shift.
