What is sample rate and bit depth? Difference between 44.1kHz, 48kHz and 24bit

When you start recording, settings such as 44.1kHz, 48kHz, and 24bit will be displayed. Although it may seem complicated, sample rate refers to the level of detail in the time direction, and bit depth refers to the level of detail in the volume direction.

What is sample rate?

Indicates how many times the sound is measured per second. If it is 44.1kHz, it will measure 44,100 times per second, and if it is 48kHz, it will measure 48,000 times. The larger the number, the greater the amount of data and the load on your PC.

What is bit depth?

Related to the fineness and margin of volume that can be recorded. If you choose 24bit when producing, it will be easier to maintain sufficient accuracy even at lower input levels, and you can record without clipping.

How to choose between 44.1kHz and 48kHz

44.1kHz is common when considering music distribution and CDs, and 48kHz is common when combined with video and video production. If there is a specification from a joint production or delivery destination, we will comply with that.

High numbers are not necessarily good

96kHz etc. have advantages depending on the application, but they also increase CPU load, storage capacity, and plug-in load. Improving the recording environment, microphone, performance, and mix often have a greater impact on the sound.

Do not change during the project

Changing the sample rate midway may cause problems with the speed and length of the sound, or with synchronization with external files. Decide when creating a new project and unify everything from recording to export.

Starting point for beginners

44.1kHz/24bit is sufficient if you mainly use music, and 48kHz/24bit is sufficient if you also handle videos. It does not raise the input peak to its limit, but allows a margin of -12 to -6 dBFS for strong parts.

If you need another format when finished, convert it with the appropriate settings at the end. Increasing the number alone does not increase the information in the already recorded sound.
